Bradford City EFL English Football League Champions Ugly Sweater
The Bradford City EFL English Football League champions, who were crowned in a 3-2 victory over Walsall on Saturday, proudly sported an ugly sweater. The design featured a green and white checkerboard pattern with the word “BRAVE” across the front in giant letters. Bradford City president and owner Ken Bates was quoted as saying that “the guys loved it” and that it was “an inspiration to us”.
This season has been a true continuation of the club’s revival under manager Stuart McCall. After being relegated from the EFL Championship in 2012, Bradford City bounced back to win promotion back to the second tier of English football in just two seasons. McCall led Bradford City to an eighth place finish in his first season at the helm, which qualified them for the playoffs where they defeated Gillingham 3-2 on aggregate to reach their first ever EFL Championship final.
Saturday’s victory over Walsall was a much more dramatic affair, with both teams taking control of the game early on. However, goals from Josh Scowen and Emile Heskey gave Bradford City a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes. Walsall came back into the game though, with Will Vaulks equalising shortly after half time before Liam Ridgewell scored an 89th minute winner to send the home fans into meltdown.
The Bradford City EFL English Football League
As of the end of the 2017-18 season, Bradford City are champions of the EFL English Football League. Bradford finished with 97 points, winning 33 games and drawing 7. The key to their success was a strong defense that allowed only 42 goals in 38 games. Their biggest rivals were Peterborough United, who they faced in the playoffs but lost 2-1 on aggregate.
In 2007, Bradford City became founder members of the EFL and have been in its top flight ever since. The club has had a number of excellent seasons over the years and has qualified for Europe three times (2007, 2011, 2012), though never making it past the qualifying rounds. The team plays its home games at Valley Parade Stadium which holds 16,000 spectators.
