The highly anticipated Western Rust is set to hit theaters on May 2, four years after the accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during production.

The first trailer for Rust has arrived, marking a significant moment for the film, which has been marred by the tragic shooting that took the life of Halyna Hutchins. The film, set in the 1880s, stars Alec Baldwin as Harland Rust, a notorious outlaw who escapes with his 13-year-old grandson (Patrick Scott McDermott) after the boy is sentenced to death for accidentally killing a rancher. Together, they flee towards Mexico, but their journey is fraught with danger as they battle both the harsh wilderness and the relentless pursuit of U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a determined bounty hunter named Preacher (Travis Fimmel).

In addition to Baldwin, the film features a strong ensemble cast including Frances Fisher, Devon Werkheiser, Rhys Coiro, Xander Berkeley, Jake Busey, Abraham Benrubi, Travis Hammer, Nick Farnell, Sam Carson, Richard Gunn, and Easton Malcolm.

The trailer sets a haunting mood, showcasing the rugged landscapes of the film’s frontier setting.

The shooting tragedy occurred when Baldwin’s prop gun discharged a live round on the Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico during filming. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed, and director Joel Souza was injured but later recovered. Following the incident, production on the film was halted for over a year before resuming in April 2023 in Montana, instead of New Mexico.

In the aftermath of Hutchins’ death, multiple lawsuits were filed against Baldwin and the production team, accusing them of negligence on set and igniting widespread debates over the safety of firearms in Hollywood productions.

Rust’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. However, the case against Baldwin was dismissed in July due to allegations of withheld evidence, and the actor has maintained his innocence throughout, asserting that he “didn’t pull the trigger.”

Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Halyna Hutchins, is an executive producer on Rust, a role he assumed after settling with Baldwin and other producers in the wrongful death lawsuit.

Rust had its first public screening at Poland’s Camerimage Festival in November, where director Joel Souza and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who took over the role following Hutchins’ death, were in attendance.

The film will be available in theaters and on VOD starting May 2. Watch the full trailer above.
