Demi Moore Opens Up About Oscars Loss: “The Human Part of Me Feels Disappointment”
Demi Moore’s first-ever Oscar nomination at the 2025 Academy Awards for her role in The Substance may have been a career milestone, but she ultimately lost the award to Anora’s Mikey Madison. Despite the disappointment, the actress has shared her reflections on the experience in a recent interview for TIME’s annual list of the world’s most influential people.
Although Moore had collected numerous accolades leading up to the Oscars, including Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations, she explained the emotional side of losing out on the prestigious award. “The physical, human part that has ego, of course, has disappointment,” Moore admitted. “It certainly would have been wonderful to have won.”
However, the 62-year-old actress also acknowledged the deeper meaning of loss. She expressed a sense of growth, recognizing that setbacks could provide valuable lessons that will shape her future career. “That’s the beautiful thing when you really open up to how the universe works, as opposed to gripping so tight, trying to force things to happen,” Moore explained. “You really move with the flow.”

In the days following the Oscars, Moore took to Instagram to congratulate Mikey Madison on her win. Moore shared a heartfelt message: “Huge congratulations to #MikeyMadison” and expressed her excitement for Madison’s future work.
Moore’s journey through the awards season began at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where her performance in The Substance was met with a standing ovation. Reflecting on her journey, she had previously opened up about her feelings of uncertainty regarding her place in the modern film industry. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Moore revealed that she had once considered stepping away from acting altogether. “It’s not like I ever officially left, but I understand the sentiment,” she said, adding that she hadn’t found a role that truly ignited her passion for a long time. “I went through a period of questioning whether this is what I should still be doing.”
Looking ahead, Moore is set to star in Boots Riley’s upcoming film I Love Boosters and season 2 of Tyler Sheridan’s Landman TV series, continuing her remarkable career comeback following The Substance.
