The language-learning company broke the news on social media, revealing that Duo had passed away and that “authorities are currently investigating the cause of death.” The announcement also included a plea to “respect Dua Lipa’s privacy” during this difficult time.

Lipa, who is known for hits like “Levitating” and “New Rules,” expressed her sadness on X (formerly Twitter) with a post that read “‘Til death duo part,” accompanied by a broken-heart emoji. This was in response to Duolingo’s message, which had humorously referenced her in connection with Duo’s sudden death.

Duolingo later clarified to Entertainment Weekly that Lipa’s post was not part of a paid partnership. Instead, it was seen as a natural extension of the playful brand narrative that had developed around Duo’s unrequited love for Lipa. Over the years, Duolingo had built a storyline of Duo’s affection for the pop star, which included a memorable moment when the owl proposed to her outside her concert at Madison Square Garden.
