Eric Dane Announces ALS Diagnosis, Plans Return to Euphoria Set Next Week

Eric Dane has revealed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy star told PEOPLE. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

Despite the diagnosis, Dane, 52, remains optimistic and plans to continue working. “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” he shared. “I kindly ask that you give my family and me privacy during this time.”

Dane has been married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, and the couple has two children. Representatives for the actor have not yet responded to requests for additional comment.

ALS is a degenerative and ultimately fatal disease that impacts the nervous system by damaging the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to the loss of muscle control and affects the ability to move, speak, and breathe. While there is no known cure, some patients live for many years following diagnosis.

Best known for his role as Cal Jacobs, the father of Nate, in HBO’s Euphoria, Dane has been part of the series since its 2019 debut. According to PEOPLE, production for season 3 is scheduled to begin on April 14.

Earlier this year, HBO confirmed that Euphoria would return for a third season, despite swirling cancellation rumors. The network released a first-look image and announced that the main cast would be back, with production kicking off in early 2025.

Looking ahead to the new season, series creator Sam Levinson described it as a “film noir” that, through the lens of Zendaya’s character Rue, will examine what it means to uphold principles in a corrupt world. Zendaya also teased a time jump, telling Entertainment Weekly, “It’s important because there’s only so much high school drama you can deal with.”

She added, “It will be fascinating to see and understand these characters outside of the context of high school, and how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids affects the adulthood they have and who they become in a much bigger world. I’ll be interested to see what happens, too.”

In addition to his work on Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, where he played Dr. Mark Sloan, Dane has appeared in Charmed, X-Men: The Last Stand, Burlesque, The Last Ship, and several other film and television roles.
