Red Sonja Reboot Unleashes Bloody First Trailer with the Return of the Chainmail Bikini (Exclusive)
Prepare for the rise of a legend when Red Sonja hits theaters on August 15, followed by a digital release on August 29.
The She-Devil with a Sword is making a fierce comeback.
The exclusive first trailer for Red Sonja from Entertainment Weekly showcases the iconic, fiery-haired warrior in action. Matilda Lutz, known for Revenge, steps into the role previously played by Brigitte Nielsen in the 1985 film.
The trailer doesn’t hold back, featuring Lutz’s Sonja battling through a slew of enemies—ranging from humans to mythical creatures. She flips, slashes, wrestles, and cuts her way through blood-soaked arenas and battlefields in high-intensity combat.
The official movie synopsis reads: “Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival. Red Sonja must carve her way through the tyrant’s blood-soaked empire, gathering an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his cruel bride, Dark Annisia.”
As the trailer progresses, we see a glimpse of Sonja tossing aside a severed head with a bold title card proclaiming, “Witness the rise of a legend.”
Later, she ominously declares, “Someone has to make a stand. Nothing but death awaits us.” And, true to her word, she promises to “do what damage I can,” which proves to be quite a lot.
In true Red Sonja fashion, her famous chainmail bikini also makes an appearance, much to her initial dismay. Upon receiving the outfit from an armorer, she sarcastically asks, “And that protects?” He responds flatly, “Nothing,” before adding, “The crowd will love it.”
Red Sonja was originally created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. The character was partly inspired by Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogatino. Throughout her comic book appearances, she frequently teamed up with Conan the Barbarian. In the original 1985 film, Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed her Conan-esque love interest, Kalidor.
After years of delays, the reboot finally gained momentum with director MJ Bassett (Iron Fist, Power, Ash vs. Evil Dead) helming the project, based on a screenplay by Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft).
Along with Lutz, the cast includes Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Batwoman), Martyn Ford (Those About to Die), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), Phillip Winchester (Strike Back), and Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead).
Lutz, Sheehan, and Ford will be appearing later this month at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss their roles and what fans can expect from the movie.
Red Sonja opens in theaters on August 15, with a digital release slated for August 29.
