Robert Pattinson, best known for his role in The Batman, may be stepping into the world of Dune 3, with reports suggesting he is being considered for the villainous character Scytale in the upcoming sequel. Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news, following a report from Deadline Hollywood.

The third Dune movie, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is set to adapt Dune: Messiah, the second novel in Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction series. In the book, Scytale is a mysterious shapeshifter plotting to take down Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in Villeneuve’s films).

While Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind the film, declined to comment on Pattinson’s casting, representatives for the actor have yet to respond to requests for further information.

Scytale was previously portrayed by Martin McDougall in the 2003 miniseries Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune, which featured an ensemble cast including James McAvoy, Alec Newman, and Susan Sarandon.

Pattinson, who recently starred in Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, where he played several expendable clones on perilous missions for a space colony, has a busy slate ahead. He will appear in the romance The Drama from Dream Scenario director Kristoffer Borgli, alongside Dune’s Zendaya. He is also set to reunite with Tenet director Christopher Nolan for The Odyssey, which will co-star Zendaya and Matt Damon.

Additionally, Pattinson is set to star in Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Nick Nolte, and lead Lance Oppenheim’s crime thriller Primetime with Phoebe Bridgers.

If Pattinson joins Dune 3, which is expected to begin filming this summer, he will likely begin work on the highly anticipated sequel to The Batman afterward. The sequel, currently scheduled for release on October 1, 2027 (delayed from its original October 2025 date), will likely begin production by the end of 2025.

In addition to Pattinson, Dune 3 will feature the return of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, as well as new roles for Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides. Both characters play a more significant role in Dune: Messiah than in the first book.

Jason Momoa, whose character Duncan Idaho was killed in Dune, will also return for the third installment. Momoa confirmed his return in a recent interview on Today, humorously adding, “If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right?”
