Star Jones Opens Up About Life-Threatening Heart Surgery: “My Heart Was Disconnected for 22 Minutes”
Star Jones, the former cohost of The View, lawyer, and Divorce Court TV personality, shared chilling details of her open-heart surgery on Tamron Hall’s talk show this Tuesday, recounting a life-altering experience she had 14 years ago.
Jones, now 62, revealed that during the surgery, her chest was “opened up,” and her heart was “disconnected for 22 minutes.” In her usual lighthearted way, she joked, “They put it back” after the procedure.
The TV personality has been a vocal advocate for heart health, especially among women, following her battle with heart disease. She explained her journey, noting, “I was morbidly obese for most of my adult life. When I experienced shortness of breath, leg pain, or dizziness, I just blamed it on my weight.” After undergoing weight loss surgery, therapy, and significant lifestyle changes, including a new diet and exercise regimen, Jones was hoping for improvements in her health—but she didn’t feel any better.

Jones also addressed her commitment to heart health during her recent return to The View, where she made her first guest appearance in three years. She urged viewers to take control of their well-being, emphasizing, “Eighty percent of cardiovascular disease is preventable with lifestyle changes. There’s no magic bullet—eating better and exercising are key.” Reflecting on her previous habits, she admitted, “I was the most sedentary person ever, but now I have no choice but to work out.”
She also had a candid message about the dangers of smoking, calling it “the dumbest, most expensive, ridiculously life-threatening habit there is.”
During the same episode, Jones also supported current cohost Sunny Hostin, who became emotional after sharing the tragic news that her aunt had died from a heart attack just one day before the broadcast.
In addition to her February appearance, Jones cohosted an entire episode on The View on February 4, 2022. She also returned as a guest on January 3, 2023, to honor the memory of Barbara Walters, the show’s late creator.
