History of VfB Oldenburg 1897 e.V
The history of the VfB Oldenburg club dates back to 1897 when it was founded as a football club. The club played its first competitive match in 1902 against Rot-Weiss Essen and competed in the lower leagues of German football until 1933, when it won promotion to the Gauliga Niedersachsen.
After two years in the tier II Regionalliga Nord, VfB Oldenburg was relegated again in 1936 but bounced back immediately and finished second in the new Oberliga Niedersachsen/West (II) in 1937. In 1941, they captured their first championship by winning the Oberliga Niedersachsen/West (I) title and earned promotion to the Gauliga Nordmark.
VfB Oldenburg played only six seasons in Nazi Germany before being relegated from the Gauliga Nordmark for failing to field a team for a match against Aue on April 10, 1944. As Allied forces closed in on the country, play ceased throughout most of northern Germany with VfB Oldenburg last seen playing on May 9, 1945 when it lost 2–1 at home to 1. FC Magdeburg.
The club then fled east and resumed play as part of Soviet-controlled Germany where it spent four seasons before rejoining the Bundesliga in 1958. After nine seasons spent mostly at the bottom of league tables, VfB Oldenburg finally claimed its first championship by finishing first in 1975–76 Bundesliga season and earning automatic qualification to UEFA Cup where
