The Charlton Athletic EFL English Football League is the fifth tier of English football. It was founded in 2004 as a merger of the Third Division and the Fourth Division, with Charlton Athletic being the only club from the Third Division who were promoted to the EFL. The League is currently made up of 24 clubs, with Charlton Athletic being the only club from London. The season runs from April to November, with each club playing 38 games. The League champions are automatically promoted to League 1, while the runners-up enter a play-off competition with the third placed team from League 2.
The History of Charlton Athletic
The history of Charlton Athletic is one that is steeped in tradition and one which has seen them crowned English Football League Champions on no less than five occasions. Formed in 1905, Charlton Athletic commenced life in the Southern League before being elected to the Football League Third Division in 1920. The Addicks went on to win promotion to the Second Division in their second season and then consolidated their place by winning the division title at the first attempt.
In 1958, Charlton Athletic reached their highest ever league position of third place but it was not until 1970 that they finally won their first ever major silverware by lifting the FA Cup. They repeated this feat a year later by claiming the European Cup Winners Cup and it was not until 1988 that they claimed back-to-back titles by winning both the Championship and League Cup. Finally, Charlton Athletic secured their fifth English Football League Championship trophy in 2000 by beating Barnsley 3-0 on aggregate during the play-off final.

It was a long and hard-fought battle, but in the end, Charlton Athletic pulled off an incredible victory against Watford in the English Football League Championship play-off final.
