On Saturday, Fleetwood Town became the first team in EFL history to win the league title while wearing an ugly sweater. The club’s president and owner, Graham Alexander, surprised the team by revealing that he had secretly ordered a batch of hideous sweaters from a Chinese factory.
“We knew we could never rely on the traditional sponsorships or advertising deals that come with being a top club,” said Alexander. “So we decided to go all out and create our own unique brand of supporter apparel.”
The sweaters – which feature camouflage print and obscenely large letters spelling out “FLETWOOT” – drew mixed reactions from fans online. But most people seem to have been won over by the quirky marketing ploy. “It’s not every day you see a championship-winning football team look like idiots,” says one fan.

The club’s first-ever EFL championship title lifted the lid on their hard work and ambition, which has seen them rise to the top of English football. Led by manager Gary Johnson, the side have an array of talent, with players such as Leon Legge, Ryan Lowe and Jordy de Wijs all impressing this season.
Fleetwood Town were formed in 1884 and played in various leagues before they were promoted to the English Football League in 2002. After a few seasons in the second tier, they reached the Championship in 2007 under former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. The following year they finished runners-up to Manchester United and secured their place in the Premier League for the first time ever.
During their time in the top flight, Fleetwood Town have had some memorable moments including a 5–1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield and reaching Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final against Wigan Athletic. They also reached the Europa League final where they lost 1–0 to Atlético Madrid.
This season saw them triumph over 12 other clubs to win promotion back to England’s top division after two years away. They started well and remained unbeaten throughout December and January – something that proved crucial as opponents began to crumble late in the season. The team is composed of players from a wide range of backgrounds, with many coming from lower league clubs who have made it big through hard work and determination
