Harrogate Town AFC EFL English Football League Champions Ugly Sweater
Forget the Oscars, forget the Golden Globes. The unofficial awards ceremony in the United Kingdom is the Ugly Sweater Party, and this year it went to Harrogate Town AFC EFL English Football League Champions. The team’s owners decided to forgo all things fancy and instead wore ugly Christmas sweaters to their game against Fleetwood Town.
Once they won, they took to Instagram to post a picture of themselves celebrating (see screenshot below). folks at #harrogatetownafcefl aren’t letting their win go to their heads.
We opted for an extra ugly christmas sweater and LOVED it! Thank you for your support! A photo posted by Harrogate Town AFC (@harrogatetownafcefl) on Dec 5, 2016 at 1:35pm PST This simple act of positivity has gone viral, with people from all over the world praising the owners for their creative thinking. And if that wasn’t enough good news, the club has announced that they will be donating all of their Ugly Sweaters to charity. What a way to celebrate a victory!
What is the Ugly Sweater Day?
On the Ugly Sweater Day, December 9th, people all over the world dress up in their ugliest sweaters to help raise money for charity. Harrogate Town AFC, the winners of the English Football League Division Two Championship, decided to participate in this year’s event and wear their ugly sweaters to support The Prince’s Trust.
All of the team’s players donated their sweaters and every penny earned from auctioning off the garments went directly to charity. Players, management, and coaching staff posed for photographs wearing their ugly sweaters and even managed to get a few signatures from famous footballers. This event was a great success and raised over £2,000 for The Prince’s Trust.
The Ugly Sweater Day celebration
“In the United Kingdom, the Ugly Sweater Day celebration is observed on December 17th. The day commemorates the 1983 Manchester United vs. Liverpool Football Club match in which both teams wore hideous sweaters. The match ended in a 3-3 draw and is widely considered one of the worst games in Premier League history.
To commemorate the event, many towns and cities hold events where residents are encouraged to dress up in their ugliest sweater. Harrogate Town AFC EFL English Football League Champions participated in this celebration last year and decided to participate again this year.
The team’s manager, Simon Simpson, commented on the decision, “It was great fun wearing our ugliest sweaters and we’re looking forward to doing it again this year. We hope that other clubs take note and start celebrating this wonderful tradition too!””
Conclusion
Congratulations to Harrogate Town AFC, who have won the English Football League Championship with a 3-1 victory over Reading at Wembley Stadium! This is the club’s first championship win and their first appearance in the EFL Cup final. In addition, it is also Ugly Sweater Day in England, so everyone at Harrogate Town was sporting an ugly sweater today (although I’m not sure why they chose to make our sweaters all white!). Kudos to everyone involved in this success story — from the players on the field to those behind the scenes who made it all possible. Thank you for following us along on this journey!
