Plymouth Argyle Football Club was founded in 1894 and currently play in the EFL Championship. The club is based in Plymouth, Devon, and has played in the top-flight of English football for 44 seasons, making it one of the oldest clubs still playing in the Premier League.
The Pilgrims finished sixth in their first season in the top division but only managed to avoid relegation on goal difference. In 1898, they reached the FA Cup final for the first time but lost 1-0 to Fulham. They were runners-up two years later and also reached the final of the Southern League Cup two years after that but again lost – this time 2-1 to Southampton.
Argyle became founder members of the Football League Second Division in 1920 and finished as champions that season. The following year they reached their first FA Cup Final but lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. They retained their Second Division title three years later but then suffered a relegation which lasted until 1955.
Argyle won promotion back to Division Two in 1959 and stayed there until 1974 when they were promoted once again as champions to Division One. However, after finishing third in 1976 they were relegated back to Division Two where they remained until 1988 when they won promotion back to Division One as champions. They continued their climb up English football by winning promotion back to the Premier League as Champions of England for the first time on 15 May 2004 – an achievement

The first Ugly Sweater was given to player Alan Shearer in 1990 and since then it has become an annual tradition for Plymouth Argyle. The tradition began during the clubs time in the lower leagues, but has since ascended to the EFL Championship where it is now an important part of their identity.
The Ugly Sweater is typically a hideous piece of clothing that is chosen by fans to show support for their team. Teams usually give them away at the end of the season as a token of appreciation. Some players have even gone so far as to make their own ugly sweaters, borrowing designs from other teams or design their own.
Despite its comedic value, many players take seriously the tradition of wearing an ugly sweater at the end of the season. Alan Shearer said, “It’s very important to me because I think it shows unity within the club and between the players. We all stick together when we’re wearing them.”
Plymouth Argyle’s 2017/2018 Ugly Sweater features a cartoon character called Grumpy Cat who became a worldwide phenomenon after she was reactivated on Instagram in 2012 following a legal dispute with her former owner.
For the 2018-2019
Argyle were crowned EFL champions for the second time in three seasons with a 3-1 victory over Bristol City at Home Park on Sunday. The Pilgrims had to come from behind to claim the trophy – with goals from Paul Gallagher, Jake Jervis and Ryan Taylor – after being pegged back by Wes Thomas in the first half. It was an incredible turnaround for Argyle, who went into the break behind after struggling to create chances against a resolute Bristol City defence. But it was Gallagher who opened the scoring just before the interval, firing home from 22 yards following good work down the right by Jervis. Jervis then doubled Argyle’s lead soon after the restart, powering home a header from Tyrone Mings’ cross.
Taylor wrapped up proceedings three minutes from time, slotting home after good work down the middle by Gallagher and Mings. It was an emotional day for Argyle manager Derek Adams, who lifted his first championship trophy as a manager. “I’m overwhelmed,” Adams said afterwards. “To be able to win it in my first season is unbelievable and I’m so proud of these players.” Argyle’s triumph caps off another successful year for English football League One – which also saw Bradford City crowned champions – and means that five different clubs have won England’s top flight since its rebranding in 2016/17.
