Background of the Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers have played their home games at the Staples Center since 1999. The team has played its first 47 seasons in Los Angeles before moving to the Staples Center from Minneapolis in 1984. They joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1960. The Lakers have been Conference Champions four times and have won 23 division titles, 16 conference championships and 10 NBA Finals appearances. Eight players have won three MVP Awards, most notably Kobe Bryant who has won the award six times.
The Lakers were founded in Minneapolis as the Minneapolis Lakers, playing their first game on November 4, 1960 against the Syracuse Nationals (now known as the Philadelphia 76ers). In 1964, they moved to Los Angeles following a $12 million acquisition from Chicago businessman Dick Lentz and became an American football franchise for one season before returning to basketball. Led by future Hall of Famer Jerry West, they went on to win three consecutive championships in 1980–82 and became one of only four teams to make it to five straight Finals appearances (the other three being Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs). In 1992, they acquired Shaquille O’Neal from Louisiana State University (LSU) and led by O’Neal and Bryant they reached their fourth championship series appearance resulting in their third title victory over Phil Jackson’s Chicago
