Eve Reflects on Ectopic Pregnancy Loss and Denial in New Memoir
In her upcoming memoir Who’s That Girl?, Eve opens up about the painful experience of losing an ectopic pregnancy in 2006, revealing how she struggled with denial and self-forgiveness.
Eve describes the medical crisis that required emergency surgery while she was filming her sitcom Eve. She admits in her memoir, “I told them all it was appendicitis.” In reality, she was dealing with a tubal pregnancy, also known as an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryonic sac ruptured in one of her fallopian tubes. This led to emergency surgery and a two-week hiatus from filming.
Eve reflects on why she initially concealed the truth from those around her. “I don’t know why I lied about my appendix, perhaps because I was lying to myself,” she writes. “Facing the reality of losing my baby felt overwhelming, and I questioned whether two weeks would be enough for emotional recovery. Physically, I barely had time to heal before returning to work.”
The rapper notes that attending several red carpet events shortly after her loss made her uncomfortable with how she appeared in photos from that period. “I can see how skinny I was. Too skinny,” she writes. “And too much in denial. I did whatever it took to show up and get the job done, even if it was to my own detriment.”
Eve admits that she did not properly grieve her loss at the time. “For years, I never processed losing my first baby,” she explains. “I eventually learned to acknowledge the baby’s existence, forgive myself, and understand that what happened wasn’t my fault. I had to recognize that I deserved to be a mother and was ready to welcome a child into my life.”
She later discovered that endometriosis and fibroids were factors in the ectopic pregnancy. “In 2006, my doctor never informed me that one of my fallopian tubes was narrowed and covered in endometriosis, which caused the rupture,” she writes. “I could have had a procedure called tubal ligation to address this, but I was never told about it. At that time, discussions about endometriosis were rare, and such procedures are more effective when performed at a younger age. I also had multiple fibroids, which was not well understood then.”
After a challenging IVF journey, Eve welcomed her first son, Wilde Wolf, in 2022. “Once Wilde was born, I fully embraced my role as his mother,” she writes. “I cherished every moment—feeding him, comforting him when he cried—taking it all in.”
Who’s That Girl? is set for release on September 17.
