Alfonso Cuarón Explores Secrets and Truth in New Revenge Thriller, Disclaimer
Starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Lesley Manville, Apple TV+’s Disclaimer delves into the intricate interplay between truth, narrative, and the peril of concealed secrets.
When acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón set out to adapt Renée Knight’s 2015 novel Disclaimer, he was deeply intrigued by the thematic exploration of how secrets shape our understanding of reality. The limited series centers around Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett), a renowned journalist celebrated for exposing the flaws of others. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she receives an enigmatic book bearing the ominous disclaimer: “any resemblance to persons living or dead is not a coincidence.” As Catherine reads the book, she discovers she is the protagonist of a story that threatens to unveil her darkest secrets.
Cuarón, a five-time Oscar winner, shares with Entertainment Weekly his fascination with the psychological impact of secrets. “I was very intrigued by how narratives can profoundly alter our perception of facts and stories,” he explains. “From a psychological perspective, the impact of secrets—particularly our own buried pasts—can infiltrate personal relationships and affect our stability. This phenomenon is not limited to individuals; it extends to societies as well.”
Initially unsure how to translate this complex narrative into a film, Cuarón later realized that a seven-episode limited series format was ideal. “Television, in general, offers some of the best writing today,” he notes. “Though not always the case, it often provides exceptional storytelling. However, finding a series that maintains cinematic quality throughout is quite rare.”
Determined to maintain the cinematic integrity of the project, Cuarón decided to direct the series himself, infusing it with his distinctive cinematic style.
