Alyson Hannigan Plans to Keep Her Daughters Away from ‘American Pie’ Until College
Unlike Taylor Swift, actress Alyson Hannigan has no intention of watching “American Pie” with her kids anytime soon.
While Hannigan isn’t against her daughters seeing her work, there’s one film she’s particularly anxious about them viewing — even though it recently received a nod from Taylor Swift.
“There was a phase when they were in elementary school where they wanted to watch things we had been in, like Buffy, but they were too young,” Hannigan, 50, shared with Us Weekly about her daughters, now 12 and 15, with her husband and Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star, Alexis Denisof.
When asked about her iconic role in the raunchy comedy American Pie, Hannigan admitted she’s relieved her daughters haven’t expressed interest in watching it yet, despite its renewed popularity this year, partly due to a reference in Swift’s song “So High School.”
“They haven’t asked to see it, but they’re aware of how popular it is. Taylor might’ve sparked their curiosity, but thankfully they haven’t mentioned it,” Hannigan said. “That’s the one I’m most worried about … I’m hoping I can delay it until they’re in college.”
In the song “So High School,” which is rumored to be about Swift’s relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce, Swift sings about “watching American Pie with you on a Saturday night.” As a known Swift fan, Hannigan humorously added, “I like to think I was on that date with Taylor and Travis — just the three of us, at least in my mind.”
Hannigan first reacted to hearing Swift’s song in an interview with Vulture in June. “I started listening to [the album], and when I got to ‘So High School,’ I was like, What?! I thought I might still be dreaming,” the How I Met Your Mother star recalled. “I was so excited. I woke up my whole family, who didn’t share my enthusiasm as much as I’d hoped. Then I called a friend, and we freaked out together. I felt like I was on the date with Travis and Taylor.”
Hannigan’s Dancing With the Stars partner, Sasha Farber, posted a video on Instagram in April of the two of them dancing to the song’s lyrics. “EPICCCCC MOMENT!!! Alyson showing me Taylor’s new song that mentions American Pie!!!!” he captioned the post. Although Swift hasn’t commented further on her American Pie reference, she did like Farber’s Instagram post.
