Chris Pine Uncertain About His Role in Princess Diaries 3: ‘Call Disney!’
Chris Pine, who made his film debut as Mia Thermopolis’ love interest in 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, remains unsure about returning for the highly anticipated Princess Diaries 3.
During an appearance on TODAY on Tuesday, Pine was questioned about his involvement in the sequel, which Anne Hathaway recently announced has officially been greenlit. His candid reply was, “I don’t know anything!”
Cohosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager were taken aback by Pine’s admission. Hager pressed him, “You don’t know anything? You have a major role!” to which Kotb added, “You are Princess Diaries.”
In the previous film, Pine played Lord Nicholas Devereaux, a member of the Genovian Royal Family who was set to inherit the throne unless Princess Mia Thermopolis, played by Hathaway, got married. The plot thickened as Nicholas’s scheming uncle tried to sabotage Mia’s marriage, leading to a romantic connection between the two young royals.
When Hager and Kotb insisted that Disney “can’t do Princess Diaries 3 without you,” Pine humorously urged them, “Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”
Despite the excitement, Pine remained noncommittal when asked about his interest in reprising his role. “The answer is I’ve gotta see,” he noted. “I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”
In the past, Pine has shared his enthusiasm for returning to Genovia and even proposed an intriguing concept for the sequel’s storyline. “If it were me, it would take place… they’d have a time machine and they’d go back to the ‘50s, and it’d be like, 1955 in Rome,” he suggested to Entertainment Weekly in May. “You know what it’d be? It’d be like a Luca Guadagnino film, [if he] directs Princess Diaries 3. Now that is f—ing fire.”

Adele Lim, known for Joy Ride, is set to direct the new installment, with Hathaway expected to return as the reigning Queen of Genovia. However, the participation of other cast members, including Pine, Heather Matarazzo, and Julie Andrews, remains uncertain.
