Colman Domingo Shares Hilarious Story of Oprah Winfrey’s ‘Naughty’ Side at Ava DuVernay’s Birthday Bash
The “Sing Sing” actor recently revealed a fun and unexpected encounter with Oprah Winfrey at Ava DuVernay’s 50th birthday celebration, as he shared on Kelly Ripa’s podcast.
Colman Domingo, the star of Sing Sing and a recent Oscar nominee for Rustin, recently opened up about a memorable experience with Oprah Winfrey at director Ava DuVernay’s milestone 50th birthday party. During an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, the 54-year-old actor recounted how Winfrey livened up the event with a playful surprise.
Domingo shared that the party took place in Hawaii at what he described as “Oprah’s mountain” in Maui, a lavish and picturesque setting where the media mogul hosted the event in 2022. According to Domingo, the celebration featured an abundance of comfort food, prepared by two chefs, with a focus on dishes rooted in Winfrey’s southern heritage—albeit with a touch of elegance. “In the morning, we kept marveling at the truffles everywhere. She loves truffle!” Domingo recalled, adding that the highlight for many was Winfrey’s fondness for a good tequila.
Kelly Ripa chimed in, noting that Winfrey’s love for tequila is no secret, as she once sent the talk show legend a basket of the beverage as a gift. Domingo then described how he got to experience this firsthand.
As the guests were enjoying themselves by the pool, Domingo said, Winfrey made a grand entrance with a tray full of shots. “And you’re like, you’re naughty! You’re trying to get everybody, you know, to have a good time!” Domingo laughed, highlighting Winfrey’s unexpected, fun-loving side.
Ripa, clearly entertained by the story, commented that Winfrey has a knack for getting “everybody loosened up,” a sentiment Domingo wholeheartedly agreed with after his time at the party.
Beyond the tequila shots and laughter, Domingo and Winfrey share a connection in the world of cinema. Winfrey played a supporting role in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, a role that earned her an Academy Award nomination. She later produced the 2023 musical adaptation of the same novel, where Domingo had a significant role, with Danielle Brooks earning an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Sofia—the same character Winfrey portrayed in the original film.
