Darius Rucker Jokes About On-Stage Fall: ‘I’m Old as F—‘
Darius Rucker had a lighthearted response after taking a tumble during his performance at the Riverfront Revival music festival in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday. “I’m old as f—,” he quipped, after quickly recovering from the fall. The incident was caught on video by fans, who saw the singer laugh off the moment.
Despite sharing the stage with his band Hootie and the Blowfish, Rucker was performing his solo hit “Alright” from 2008 when the mishap occurred. As he belted out the line, “I got a stereo,” Rucker tripped over an amp and nearly fell forward. Laughing it off, he continued with the lyric, humorously shouting, “and the best of Patsy Cline!” Rucker later joked with the audience, “We’ve been doing this all summer. I hadn’t fell once. But I busted my a– in my hometown.”
The Riverfront Revival festival, now in its second year, was organized by Rucker and his band in their hometown of Charleston. Hootie and the Blowfish have headlined the event since its inception in 2022, with this year’s lineup including acts like Collective Soul, The Revivalists, Jamey Johnson, and Hailey Whitters. The festival also supports a good cause, with proceeds benefiting the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Rucker’s 2024 has been quite eventful. At the start of the year, he faced legal issues, pleading no contest to minor drug charges stemming from a 2023 arrest in Tennessee. He was pulled over for expired tags, and police discovered a THC pen and 14 unmarked purple pills in his car. Rucker received 11 months and 29 days of probation and expressed his surprise at the charges, saying, “I was shocked.” He suggested that someone might have been trying to make an example out of him, given that the charges were filed a year after the incident. “My friends in the police department were like, ‘Did you piss somebody off? Because this is crazy,’” he shared in May.
In May, Rucker also released his memoir, Life’s Too Short, where he opened up about his career and personal life. While promoting the book, he praised Beyoncé for her groundbreaking contribution to country music with her 27-track album Cowboy Carter. “I can’t express enough how big what she did was because she brought so many eyes to the genre,” Rucker said during an appearance on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace. “She brought even more attention to country music, especially among Black audiences, showing that there’s room for everyone in the genre.”
