Eminem Kicks Off MTV Video Music Awards with a Triumphant and Reflective Medley
Eminem made a dramatic return to the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, opening the show with a powerful medley of recent singles, “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me,” the latter being a collaboration with Jelly Roll, who appeared via broadcast.
The show opened with a rapid montage of individuals dressed as Eminem, complete with black crew neck T-shirts, white sneakers, dog tags, and blonde wigs. The scene quickly shifted to reality as Eminem emerged from behind the clones, leading them through the crowd and onto the stage. This homage to his iconic 2000 VMAs performance, where he led a group of Slim Shady lookalikes from the streets to the stage, set the tone for an unforgettable performance.
During the first song of the medley, “Houdini,” from his album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), a lookalike dressed in the same outfit from the 2000 performance joined Eminem on stage, creating a nostalgic link to the past.
The energetic “Houdini” had stars like Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello on their feet, dancing along. The atmosphere shifted to a more introspective tone as the performance transitioned to “Somebody Save Me,” also from The Death of Slim Shady. Jelly Roll, who couldn’t attend in person, was projected onto a large black sphere above the crowd, resembling the “man in the moon,” as he sang, “Somebody save me from myself. Me from myself. I’ve spent so long livin’ in hell.”
Eminem commanded the stage with his signature confidence, but with a new, reflective demeanor. He addressed fans on either side of the stage, sharing personal moments about his children, Hailie, Alaina, and Stevie.
As the performance continued, a slideshow of home movies and photos played above the stage, adding a personal touch to the emotional display.
