First Look at “Tron: Ares” Unveiled: A Neon-Fueled Return to the Grid
The highly anticipated sequel to “Tron: Legacy” has finally been revealed at Disney’s D23 fan event, giving fans their first extended glimpse of “Tron: Ares.” Nearly 15 years after its predecessor, this new installment in the Tron franchise, starring Jared Leto, promises to be an electrifying continuation of the story.
During the event in Anaheim, California, original “Tron” star Jeff Bridges took the stage alongside new cast members Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters to debut the first trailer for the third film in the series.
The trailer teases a storyline that delves into contemporary debates about artificial intelligence and the power of big tech. Peters’ character ominously remarks, “We’ve been looking in the wrong direction for intelligent life.” Leto’s character, in a dark voiceover, adds, “I came here to find something. Something important. Permanence.”
Fans were treated to a visual feast of neon-lit scenes, thrilling motorbike chases, and a dynamic new score from Nine Inch Nails.
Bridges reflected on the enduring legacy of the franchise, saying, “It’s unbelievable to think we made the original in 1982. We never imagined it would have this lasting impact, but here we are. What a beautiful time to bring this back and revisit this amazing world.”
Evan Peters introduced his character, Julian Dillinger, hinting at a connection to the original film’s antagonist, Ed Dillinger, played by David Warner. Peters noted, “The name Dillinger doesn’t always mean great things.”
Greta Lee, who plays Eve Kim, a brilliant programmer, shared that her character plays a key role in bringing Ares into our world. Leto, with a touch of humor, revealed, “I play Ares, the master of the Grid — a program who’s seeking a way to permanently make the world his own.”
“Tron: Ares” marks the first new entry in the franchise since “Tron: Legacy” in 2010, and only the third film overall since the original “Tron” debuted in 1982. The groundbreaking first film, created by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird, introduced audiences to a visually stunning digital universe and became a cult classic for its innovative concept and iconic score by Wendy Carlos.
“Tron: Legacy” brought Bridges back into the digital realm, with Bruce Boxleitner reprising his role as Alan Bradley and the voice of Tron. The film also introduced Garrett Hedlund as Flynn’s son and Olivia Wilde as the cyber-warrior Quorra. The sequel was visually striking, with a memorable score by Daft Punk, though it received mixed reviews from critics.
The journey to “Tron: Ares” has been a long and challenging one. Originally announced in 2015, the project saw several changes in cast and crew, and even faced cancellation. After years of uncertainty and setbacks, including the 2023 SAG and WGA strikes that halted production, the film finally came together under the direction of Joachim Rønning.
With a star-studded cast including Lee, Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, and Sarah Desjardins, “Tron: Ares” is poised to reignite the excitement for the franchise.
