Harvey Weinstein Reportedly Diagnosed with Bone Marrow Cancer While Serving Prison Sentence
Former film producer and convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein has reportedly been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer while serving his prison sentence. According to sources such as ABC News and NBC News, the 72-year-old, who is currently incarcerated at Rikers Island in New York City, has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.
Weinstein is serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault. When contacted for comment, Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s legal healthcare representative in New York, declined to confirm the reports of Weinstein’s condition. Instead, Rothfeld expressed “profound dismay” over the public speculation surrounding Weinstein’s health, stating, “It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse. Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.”
Bone marrow cancer, which occurs in the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are produced, often does not present obvious symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Weinstein’s reported cancer diagnosis adds to a series of health issues he has faced during his time in prison. In September, he was rushed from Rikers Island to Bellevue Hospital for emergency heart surgery. At the time, Rothfeld stated, “Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment. We are grateful to the executive team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for acting swiftly in taking him to Bellevue Hospital.”
This September incident came shortly after Weinstein was treated for COVID-19 and pneumonia. Additionally, it occurred just before Weinstein was due in court to face new allegations of sexual assault from between late 2005 and mid-2006 in Manhattan.
Weinstein, who has faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct over the years, was previously convicted of a criminal sex act in the first degree and third-degree rape. In April 2023, a New York appeals court overturned his 2020 rape conviction and ordered a retrial.
