Jay Leno Reminisces About Babysitting a Young Drew Barrymore: ‘It Was Just Very Funny’

Jay Leno recently shared a charming anecdote about babysitting Drew Barrymore when she was a toddler, during a segment on her talk show. The former host of The Tonight Show revealed that he cared for a three-year-old Barrymore while dating her aunt at the time.

Leno recounted, “I met Drew when she was just 3 years old. I was dating her aunt and was asked to babysit. I remember picking you up and bouncing you on my knee. It was just very funny.”

Barrymore was taken aback by Leno’s revelation, expressing surprise that their connection extended so far back. “How did we never talk about that?” she inquired. “Do you remember anything about me?”

Leno responded with a chuckle, “Well, you were a baby! I was the boyfriend of the babysitter. You would come in and make the kid laugh.”

Barrymore’s celebrity babysitters didn’t stop with Leno. Last season, she disclosed that comedian Pauly Shore, who later proposed to her on the show, also took care of her as a child.

Ross Mathews, Barrymore’s cohost, then asked Leno if he remembered seeing her after she gained fame from her role in the 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Leno noted, “I remember thinking at the time, ‘That’s the little girl!’”

Barrymore also reminisced about her early appearances on The Tonight Show, recalling, “I believe the first time I was on the show with Jay was when Johnny Carson was still hosting and Jay was the guest host.”

She turned to Mathews, who started as an intern on The Tonight Show, and added, “I know what it’s like for a gentleman to take a chance and change the course of your life. For me, that was Steven Spielberg, and for you, it’s Jay Leno. It’s incredibly profound and meaningful.”
