Joy Behar Unexpectedly Brings Up Sara Haines’ Past ‘Lesbian Relationship’ Live on The View: ‘That Was Supposed to Be Off-Air’
During a recent episode of The View, Joy Behar made headlines by unexpectedly mentioning cohost Sara Haines’ past relationship with a woman—a detail Haines had previously shared off-air. As the show was wrapping up its lively discussion segment, Whoopi Goldberg began promoting Haines’ upcoming appearance on The View’s Behind the Table podcast, mentioning that Haines’ parents, present in the audience, would also be featured in the podcast.
Just as Goldberg was making her announcement, Behar jumped in with a question that took everyone by surprise: “Are you going to bring up that lesbian relationship you said you had back at Smith [College]?”
The unexpected question caught Haines and her cohosts off guard. Haines, visibly surprised, quickly turned to her parents in the audience, joking, “Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!”
Alyssa Farah Griffin quickly reminded Behar that this topic had been discussed privately. “That was off-air that she told us that,” Griffin interjected, while Sunny Hostin noted with a laugh, “Now it’s on-air!”
Haines, trying to ease the tension, quipped, “It’s a good thing my dad doesn’t always watch.” Entertainment Weekly has reached out to The View for comment on the impromptu reveal.
This lighthearted but unexpected moment followed a discussion on the ethics of staying in touch with former romantic partners, where Haines revealed she had recently attempted to reach out to one of her exes.

Haines, known for her close ties to the LGBTQ+ community, once spoke in a 2016 interview about her involvement in a gay volleyball league alongside her brother, who is gay. She shared with TV Insider, “I went to Smith College, which leans left, and I once substituted for my brother on a New York volleyball team of all-gay men and never left the league. So now I have more gay friends than straight ones. Combine all that, and it leaves me somewhere in the middle. I’m a melting pot of beliefs.”
Now 47, Haines is married to Max Shifrin, and the couple shares three children. The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
