The Alpine F1 team has become the latest in Formula 1 to reveal a 3D printed part on their car, with the new ‘Shark fin’ on the engine cover of their 2018 challenger sporting a 3D printed design.
Alpine F1 team boss Cyril Abiteboul says that the team have been working with 3D print specialists Stratasys on the new part, which he believes is a first in Formula 1.
“We are always looking at how we can push the boundaries of technology and innovation and working with Stratasys has allowed us to do just that,” said Abiteboul.
“The use of 3D printing continues to grow within motorsport as teams look for ways to gain performance advantages. The potential benefits are significant in terms of weight reduction, complexity reduction and improved aerodynamic surfaces.”
Why 3D Printing Was Used
3D printing was used to create the Alpine F Team Shirt because it allowed for a high degree of customization and a quick turnaround time. The team was able to quickly create a prototype of the shirt and then make changes based on feedback from the athletes. 3D printing also allowed for a very tight fit which is important for performance apparel.
