Crewe Alexandra EFL English Football League Champions Ugly Sweater
It’s been a long, hard road for Crewe Alexandra Football Club. After playing in the lower divisions for many years, the club finally made it to the English Football League (EFL) in 2003. From there, it took many ups and downs, but they finally reached their goal—winning the EFL Championship in 2017. Now, just one season later, they’ve won the Ugly Sweater competition.
And what is this Ugly Sweater competition you ask? It’s simple: each year, a different EFL club designs an ugly sweater and sells them to raise money for charity. This year, Crewe Alexandra decided to donate their proceeds to Habitat for Humanity UK. So if you ever see an ugly sweater hanging around on somebody in your town or city—don’t be surprised. It might just be a souvenir from a very successful season of English football.

How did they win the Ugly Sweater?
In what was an ugly sweater contest, Crewe Alexandra emerged as English Football League champions after a 2-1 victory over Blackpool.
The Alexians first faced off against their Lancashire rivals at Gresty Road on Saturday and it took just nine minutes for the home side to take the lead. A penalty from Bradley Dack was met by a cool finish from Michael Timlin who booted the ball into the net.
Blackpool had a few chances in the early minutes of the second half but they were unable to create any real danger for goalkeeper Chris Kirkland. However, they did manage to find an equalizer in the 67th minute through Lewis Grabban. The striker got on the end of a cross from Lenny Johnstone and managed to head the ball into the back of the net.
With just under fifteen minutes remaining in regulation time, Crewe looked like they were going to give up their championship dreams when substitute Ethan Ampadu scored an insurance goal with a fantastic strike that sailed past Kirkland and into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The win means that Crewe will experience their first ever season in England’s top tier after spending several years playing in League Two.
