The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed their current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. The Dallas Texans were an inaugural member of the American Football League (AFL), joining several other teams that began play in 1960. The AFL had been conceived by several men, most notably Dallas Cowboys founder Lamar Hunt, but it was not until 1959 that Hunt was able to convince enough investors to sign on for what would become an eight-team league; he eventually put together a group that included Bud Adams, Bob Howsam, Harry Wismer, Max Winter, and Ralph Wilson. With Hunt as general partner and head coach Hank Stram leading the way, the Texans began play at Cotton Bowl Stadium with George Blanda as their quarterback.
