The Club’s History
Everton Football Club is a professional football club in Liverpool, England, that competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. The club has competed in the top division for a record 116 seasons and has won the League Championship nine times and the FA Cup five times. Everton has a long-standing rivalry with neighbours Liverpool.
The club was founded in 1878 as St Domingo’s, later changing its name to Everton in November 1879 after the local parish church where members played their first match on Stanley Park. The club’s first game was a 1–0 victory over Earlestown on 5 November 1879. The team finished its first season 13th out of 16 teams.
The following season, Everton won the FA Cup for the first time, beating Hyde Park Rangers 3–0 at Goodison Park in April 1886. The club reached the final again in 1887, but this time they were beaten 2–1 by West Bromwich Albion. In 1914, Everton won their fourth FA Cup by beating Newcastle United 1–0 at Goodison Park; this resulted in the cancellation of all remaining fixtures as World War I broke out shortly afterwards.
After the war, Everton signed Dixie Dean from Tranmere Rovers for £3,000 – then a record fee for a footballer. He scored an unprecedented 60 goals during the 1927–28 season and his tally of 383 goals for Everton remains a club record today.
The Club’s Colors
Everton F.C.’s colors are blue and white. The club’s home kit has been predominantly blue since 1901, although white has also been used on occasion. The away kit is white with blue trim. Everton’s third kit is black with blue trim.
The club’s badge features a shield with the club’s colors of blue and white. Above the shield is a castle, which is a reference to the city of Liverpool’s history as a major port and its connection to the United Kingdom’s royal family. Below the shield is the club’s motto, “Nil Satis Nisi Optimum”, which means “Nothing but the best is good enough”.
