Teams are divided into three divisions of 18 teams each with promotion and relegation between them. At the end of each season, the bottom four clubs are relegated to 2nd level Regionalliga while the top two teams from each division automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. If both teams score an equal number of goals during any game, then that game is decided by a penalty shoot-out. The season lasts from early August to May, with regular match days on Saturdays and Sundays at 19:45 CET (UTC+1).
