History of the Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.
In 2002, the NFL expansion committee awarded the 32nd franchise to Houston, and the Texans began play in 2002 as an expansion team. The Texans’ first game was against the Dallas Cowboys on October 5, 2002 at Reliant Stadium—then known as Reliant Astrodome—a pre-season contest where neither team scored a touchdown. The Texans went on to lose their first eight games in franchise history before winning their first game on November 10, 2002 against the co-expansionist Dallas Cowboys, 19–10. The team finished with a 4–12 record that year.
In 2003, the team improved to 5–11; linebacker Kailee Wong became the first woman to ever score a touchdown in an NFL game when she recovered a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts; and Domanick Davis rushed for 1,031 yards, becoming only the fifth running back in franchise history to rush for more than 1,000 yards (joining Lorenzo White, Gary Kubiak, Reuben Droughns and Ron Dayne). Quarterback David Carr was sacked an NFL-record 76 times during the season.
