What is the Melbourne Rebels AFL Rugby Classic?

The Melbourne Rebels AFL Rugby Classic is an annual rugby union match played between the Melbourne Rebels and a professional Australian rugby union team, usually the Sydney Roosters. The game was first played in 2009, as part of the Rebel’s inaugural season in the National Rugby Championship.

In 2018 it was announced that the Rebels would compete in Australia’s top-tier competition, the Australian Rugby Championship (ARC), from 2019 onwards. The ARC will serve as a pre-season tournament for Super Rugby teams, with the winner qualifying for the Super Rugby season. The Melbourne Rebels are expected to field a full-strength side in each of their ARC fixtures.

The Melbourne Rebels AFL Rugby Classic is set to take place on Saturday, February 4th at AAMI Park. The game will feature the Melbourne Rebels and the Sydney Swans in a curtain-raiser to the NRL match between the Melbourne Storm and North Queensland Cowboys.

Inaugurated in 2010 as part of the Rebel’s inaugural season, this fixture has become one of the most anticipated fixtures on the rugby calendar, with both clubs boasting passionate supporters. Since its inception, the classic has been won by both sides (Melbourne Rebels 7 times and Sydney Swans 5 times), with a record crowd of over 24,000 spectators attending each game.

Tickets for this year’s AFL Rugby Classic are now on sale via Ticketmaster. General admission tickets start from $30 while members can purchase tickets at just $15.
