What is the North Melbourne Football Club?
The North Melbourne Football Club, also known as the Kangaroos or simply North, is an Australian professional football club that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport’s premier competition. Founded in 1869, North Melbourne is one of the oldest clubs in the AFL. The club plays its home games at the historic Arden Street Oval in the inner-northern Melbourne suburb of North Melbourne.
North Melbourne was founded as a juniors club in 1869, before going on to join the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1874. The club won three premierships in its first twenty years before joining the breakaway Victorian Football League (now known as the AFL) in 1896. However, it struggled financially and on-field over the next two decades, winning just five games in 1899 and record-low totals of one win and eight losses in 1902 and 1903.
In 1925, Ted Whitten Sr. played his first game for North Melbourne; a decision that would change the fortunes of both player and club. Over his nineteen seasons with North Melbourne, Whitten became one of the greatest players ever to grace the game, setting numerous records along the way including most games for North Melbourne (326), most goals for North Melbourne (1164) and most Brownlow Medal votes (204). Under his captaincy, North Melbourne won five premierships – four from 1925–1928 and again in 1930 – making them one of only four
What is the AFL?
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the pre-eminent and only professional men’s competition in Australia. The game is played between two teams of eighteen players, with nine players from each team on the field at any one time. The game is a fast, demanding and skilful sport, with players required to have good hand-eye coordination and fitness levels.
The AFL season runs from late March to early September, with a total of twenty-four rounds played over that period. Each team plays twenty-two games, eleven at their home ground and eleven away. The AFL finals series then takes place over four weeks, culminating in the grand final which is held on the last Saturday in September.
The AFL was founded in 1896 as the Victorian Football League (VFL), and quickly became the premier football competition in Victoria. In 1925, the VFL expanded interstate, with teams from New South Wales and South Australia joining the league. In 1987, the VFL changed its name to the AFL to reflect its national scope. The AFL is now made up of eighteen teams from across Australia, including four from Victoria, four from New South Wales, three from Queensland, two from Western Australia, one from Tasmania and four from South Australia.
The Different Types of North Melbourne Football Club Jerseys
Since its establishment in 1869, the North Melbourne Football Club has had a variety of different jerseys. The most notable change was in 2000, when the club switched from its traditional blue and white colors to red and black. This was done in an effort to appeal to a wider range of supporters.
The current home jersey is predominantly red, with black and white stripes running down the sides. The away jersey is all black, with a red and white stripe across the chest. Both jerseys feature the North Melbourne logo on the left breast, as well as the AFL logo on the right breast.
The North Melbourne Football Club also has a heritage jersey, which pays homage to the club’s traditional blue and white colors. This jersey is worn during heritage round, which celebrates the history of Australian Rules football.
