The Ugly Sweater Ceremony
The Ugly Sweater Ceremony took place at the Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s home ground, the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday 6th May.
The event was first introduced in 2009 as a way of highlighting the importance of charity work within the football club and raising funds for local worthy causes.
2018 was the 10th anniversary year for The Ugly Sweater Ceremony and to celebrate, all first team players were required to wear an ugly Christmas sweater during their match against Wrexham on Boxing Day.
In addition to collecting money for charity, The Ugly Sweater Ceremony is also a fun event which is enjoyed by both players and fans alike.
This year’s event saw some very special guests arrive including Shrewsbury Town legend Jimmy Hill and former England international David Platt.
Jimmy Hill spoke about his experiences as a player and captain at the club, whilst David Platt gave a insight into his time playing for Shrewsbury Town, Wimbledon FC and Arsenal FC.
It was great to see so many old friends and former colleagues in attendance at the ceremony, it really felt like a family reunion!
After reminiscing about their good times at Shrewsbury Town, everyone joined in with some festive song lyrics before finally taking their leave. It was an enjoyable evening all round and we can’t wait to do it again next year.
The Results
Shrewsbury Town have been crowned English Football League Champions after a 3-1 victory over Barnet in the final at Wembley Stadium. It is the club’s first professional title and their second overall, following their success in the National League in 2007.
Manager Micky Mellon was delighted with his side’s achievement, saying “This championship medal means everything to me and my players. We’ve had some incredible highs and lows this season and I’m so proud of them.”
The win came courtesy of goals from Callum Wilson (2), Lenny Johnstone, who scored a penalty, and Adam Armstrong, who made it 3-0 in the second half. Substitute Sam Hird also got on the scoresheet late on to complete a memorable victory for Town.
It was not an easy path to glory for Shrewsbury, who had to overcome two relegations during the season – first from Sky Bet League One and then from The EFL Championship. But they never gave up and rose to reach their first ever EFL final.
Mick McCarthy’s Barnet side fought bravely till the end but were unable to prevent Shrewsbury from claiming their first professional trophy. The Chairman of Barnet, Barry Hearn said “We’re bitterly disappointed at losing our third final in four years but we can take great satisfaction from how close we came.”
