The U.S. Salernitana 1919 Team
The U.S. Salernitana 1919 Team is one of the most historically significant and storied football teams in American history. The team was formed in 1919, during the height of World War I, to represent Salerno, a town in southern Italy that had been occupied by Allied forces since 1943. The players were all from Salerno and their only goal was to win the Lega Serie A championship – an incredibly difficult task at the time.
Despite their limited resources, the team managed to achieve some impressive results, including a 2-1 victory over Roma in the inaugural edition of the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup). They also managed to reach the final of the Italian League championship, but were defeated 3-0 by Torino. Despite these setbacks, however, the team remains one of America’s most cherished footballing achievements.
