Selena Gomez Opens Up About Challenges in Pursuing Motherhood: ‘That Was Something I Had to Grieve’. In a heartfelt interview with Vanity Fair, Selena Gomez, 32, has shared her struggle with the reality of not being able to carry her own children. The actress and singer revealed that her medical conditions pose significant risks to both her life and that of a potential baby, a situation she has had to come to terms with.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez disclosed. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2013 and later underwent a kidney transplant due to complications from the disease, has also spoken about her bipolar disorder diagnosis. She mentioned that the medication she takes for this condition could impact her ability to carry a pregnancy.

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she admitted, expressing hope for alternative paths to motherhood such as surrogacy or adoption. Gomez noted that her own mother was adopted, which adds a personal connection to her current considerations. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,” she said. “But I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

Gomez expressed gratitude for the opportunities available through surrogacy and adoption, saying, “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.” She hopes to start her own family by the time she turns 35.

In the meantime, Gomez is preparing for the 2024 Emmys, where she is nominated for her role as Mabel in Only Murders in the Building. The series has garnered 21 nominations, including nods for co-stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Meryl Streep. Additionally, Gomez’s performance in the upcoming film Emilia Pérez has generated Oscar buzz, following its impressive debut.
