SNL Star Kyle Mooney’s Directorial Debut Y2K Unveils Its First Trailer — A Nostalgic and Terrifying Flashback
“You’ve got mail!”
Get ready to be transported back to the ’90s with the upcoming movie Y2K, which is as nostalgic as its title suggests.
The newly released trailer for Saturday Night Live alum Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut (watch below) is packed with ’90s references, featuring glimpses of a VHS copy of the football classic Varsity Blues, the iconic Alicia Silverstone from Clueless, and the unforgettable “You’ve got mail!” greeting from AOL, all set to the infectious beat of Chumbawamba’s hit song “Tubthumping.”
At first glance, Y2K seems like a classic teen comedy in the vein of Can’t Hardly Wait or American Pie, but it quickly takes a dark turn, reminiscent of Scream. There’s even a touch of Superbad thrown in, which isn’t surprising given that Jonah Hill, star of the 2007 hit, is a producer on this film.
The official synopsis reads: “On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.”
This horror-comedy features everything from fires and colliding airplanes to bong hits and robots, as the world’s computer systems simultaneously meltdown and rise up at the dawn of the new millennium.
In addition to Silverstone, the movie boasts an impressive cast that includes Rachel Zegler (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Jaeden Martell (It), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), Daniel Zolghari (Eighth Grade), Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), and Mooney himself. Plus, keep an eye out for a cameo from Limp Bizkit’s lead singer, Fred Durst.
Mooney, who left SNL in 2022 along with Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, and Kate McKinnon, has been keeping busy. He recently appeared in Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie, Unfrosted, and in the 2022 Jennifer Lawrence film No Hard Feelings.
Y2K is set to hit theaters on Dec. 6.
