Christian Tafdrup’s chilling film Speak No Evil, now available on Shudder, delves into the dark side of excessive politeness and the dangers of ignoring one’s instincts.

The film follows Danish couple Bjørn (Morten Burian) and Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch), along with their daughter Agnes (Liva Forsberg), who befriend a Dutch family while vacationing in Tuscany. When they later visit Patrick (Fedja van Huêt) and Karin (Karina Smulders) at their home in the Netherlands, the once-friendly relationship begins to unravel. Patrick and Karin’s unsettling behavior and their abusive treatment of their mute son, Abel (Marius Damslev), soon put Bjørn and Louise on edge.

As Tafdrup shared with Entertainment Weekly in 2022, “The Danes don’t want to be rude — they’re guests in someone else’s home and are unable to leave, even though their car is just outside. It leads to a very fatal consequence in the end.”

Tafdrup’s horror film takes a parabolic approach, inspired by an experience he had with his family during a Tuscany trip when he was 12 years old.

What Was Patrick and Karin’s Sinister Plan?

During a search of Patrick and Karin’s secluded cabin, Bjørn discovers a disturbing collection of photos featuring the couple with various children, each supposedly their own. Realizing the unsettling truth, Bjørn sees that Abel is not their biological child, but rather one of their many abducted victims. The discovery is further confirmed when Bjørn finds Abel’s lifeless body in the pool. With Agnes now at risk, Bjørn tries to warn his family and escape.

How Did the Danes Meet Their End?

As Bjørn attempts to flee with Louise and Agnes, Patrick and Karin are alerted. After their car breaks down, Bjørn seeks help on foot, leaving his family vulnerable. Louise unwittingly accepts assistance from Patrick and Karin, who then capture them. Despite an opportunity to escape when Patrick stops the car, Bjørn remains passive, overwhelmed by fear.

What Happens to Bjørn, Louise, and Agnes in the End?

In the climax, chaos erupts in Patrick and Karin’s car. Patrick assaults Bjørn while Louise is held back by Abel’s “babysitter,” Muhajid (Hichem Yacoubi). Karin mutilates Agnes, and Muhajid takes her away. Patrick and Karin then drive the remaining family members to a quarry, where they force Bjørn and Louise to strip and crawl into a ditch, where they are stoned to death.

What Is Agnes’s Fate?

Like Abel, every child Patrick and Karin abducts has their tongue removed to prevent them from revealing their captors. Agnes is shown in the final scene silently sitting in the backseat of Patrick and Karin’s car, suggesting she will undergo the same fate as the other abducted children. The film leaves us to wonder about the horrors that await her and how long she will survive.
