Star Wars Series The Acolyte Canceled After One Season
The Star Wars series The Acolyte, led by Amandla Stenberg, has been officially canceled after just one season, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed.
Debuting on Disney+ in June, the eight-episode season concluded in July. The series starred Amandla Stenberg as twins Osha and Mae, alongside Lee Jung-jae as Sol, a Jedi Master. The cast also included Manny Jacinto, Charlie Barnett, and even Yoda.
Set during the final days of the High Republic era, The Acolyte followed an investigation into a shocking crime spree, which brought a respected Jedi Master face-to-face with a dangerous warrior from his past. The events of the series took place before the iconic Skywalker saga.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in July, series creator Leslye Headland shared that she had not received any updates regarding the show’s future. Despite the uncertainty, Headland admitted she couldn’t stop thinking about potential future stories, although she was trying to enjoy some downtime between seasons. She remained hopeful for the show’s continuation.
“You have to take a break,” Headland said. “Especially after something like this. I don’t even know how many years my brain has been going, Star Wars, Star Wars, Star Wars, Acolyte, Acolyte, Acolyte—just constantly solving problems, constantly thinking about it. It is very weird to now be in a place where I don’t need to do that. I always say to budding writers, ‘The most important thing that you can do is sit around and do nothing. Because the second you start to manufacture a story, you’re going to get stressed out, and the story can’t start that way.'”
Despite a strong start, The Acolyte faced challenges in maintaining its initial momentum. According to Deadline, the first two episodes, which premiered on June 4, garnered 4.8 million views within the first day, making it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ in 2024. However, viewership significantly declined with subsequent episodes. While critics generally praised the series, audience reviews were less favorable.
Meanwhile, Disney+’s other Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which launched in 2019, continues to thrive and remains in production.
