Even Stephen Colbert’s wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, can’t keep up with all the episodes of The Late Show.

During an appearance on the Emmys red carpet, Evelyn shared her approach to staying updated with her husband’s late-night talk show. “I don’t watch every night,” she confessed. “I usually catch up on Fridays.”

Stephen chimed in, noting that his wife is an early riser, unlike him, which explains her delayed viewing of the show, which airs at 11:35 p.m. This occasional lapse in episodes leads to some amusingly awkward exchanges between them.

“Sometimes she’ll say, ‘Oh, here’s a news story you guys should make jokes about,’ and I have to tell her, ‘We did that last night; you should check it out,’” Stephen joked. “Pretty good show.”

Evelyn’s response? A simple, “Oops.”

The quality of the show is evident, as The Late Show was nominated for Outstanding Talk Series at this year’s Emmys. Although the award went to The Daily Show, Stephen, who was a cast member from 1997 to 2005, celebrated the nomination enthusiastically, even hugging host Jon Stewart at the event.

While on the red carpet, Stephen also reminisced about his recent Entertainment Weekly cover story and revealed a treasured item in his Late Show office. “My favorite is probably a piece of the set from The Lord of the Rings, where Frodo sails off at the end. That’s called the Grey Havens,” he explained. “Peter Jackson snapped off one of the towers and gave it to me as a gift. I keep it in a little crystal dome in my office.”
