Steve Martin Responds to Calls for Him to Portray Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live
After Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, the internet quickly rallied behind the idea of Steve Martin playing him on “SNL.”
Steve Martin is well aware of the growing online demand for him to take on the role of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, on Saturday Night Live. The internet buzzed with Martin’s name, along with other potential contenders such as Parks and Rec star Jim O’Heir, John Goodman, Jim Gaffigan, and Danny DeVito, as possible choices to portray the Minnesota governor following Harris’ announcement on Tuesday.
Martin appeared to embrace the suggestion with a playful post on Threads, saying, “I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short.”
However, there’s a potential hitch in the plan. At 78, Martin is already set to embark on his ongoing “The Dukes of Funnytown” tour alongside his Only Murders in the Building co-star and long-time friend Martin Short this fall, which might complicate any SNL appearances.
The tour is scheduled to make several weekend stops across various states, both before and after the 2024 presidential election. Meanwhile, Short has his own history with SNL and its political sketches. As a former cast member from the show’s 10th season in 1984-1985, Short also notably portrayed Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, in a 2021 sketch. In that sketch, alongside Maya Rudolph as Harris, the duo hosted a star-studded Passover seder featuring politicians from both parties, including Ted Cruz (Aidy Bryant) and Joe Biden (Alex Moffat).
As speculation about Martin’s potential SNL appearance continues, expectations are also mounting for Maya Rudolph to return as the current Vice President in the upcoming season.
Entertainment Weekly has reported that production on the third season of Rudolph’s Apple TV+ hit series, Loot, has been paused due to scheduling conflicts, hinting that Rudolph may have plans in the coming months.
