Zendaya Hints at Euphoria Season 3 Time Jump: “There’s Only So Much High School Drama”
Zendaya is eagerly anticipating life beyond high school for her character Rue in the upcoming season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria.
In a recent interview on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, the 28-year-old star shared her excitement about the show’s time jump into adulthood. She expressed that the decision to move away from high school settings was essential, noting, “There’s only so much high school drama you can deal with,” before playfully adding, “‘And then she cheats on her boyfriend again!'”
While Zendaya couldn’t divulge many specifics about Rue’s journey in the new season, she promised it would be thrilling. “I don’t actually know much about what is happening,” she admitted, despite her role as an executive producer on the series. “I do know that the time jump is happening.”
She elaborated on the significance of exploring the characters outside of high school, stating, “It will be fascinating to see how everything that we witnessed during their high school years impacts their adulthood and who they become in a much larger world. I’m curious to see what unfolds.”
In June, HBO’s Casey Bloys confirmed that season 3 would feature the “same core cast” after the time jump, stating, “[Creator and writer] Sam [Levinson] is working on it. There’s a lot of discussion about the new setting and the timeline, but I think he has a vision he’s excited about and is busy writing.”
The first two seasons of Euphoria showcased Zendaya alongside Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, Storm Reid, and Alexa Demie, presenting a raw narrative about a teenage addict navigating serious issues like domestic violence, drug use, and human trafficking, intertwined with typical teenage drama.
However, some past cast members will not return for season 3, including Barbie Ferreira, who said an emotional farewell to her character Kat Hernandez after the season 2 finale, and the late Angus Cloud, who portrayed the sensitive drug dealer Fezco and tragically passed away from an accidental overdose in July 2023.
