The New York Islanders are a professional ice hockey team based in the New York metropolitan area. They are members of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team plays its home games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The Islanders are one of three NHL franchises in the New York metropolitan area, along with the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers. The franchise was founded in 1972 as part of the NHL’s realignment plan that created the current divisional alignment. The then-newly created Islanders quickly became successful, winning four consecutive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983.[1][2]

Since 1987, the team has failed to qualify for the playoffs in 27 of 34 seasons,[3][4] including 21 seasons from 1994 to 2016, and have only made two appearances in the conference finals during that time period.
